Mamilla Hotel
Israel's modern masterpiece
What it is
Cutting-edge design amidst ancient history.
What it isn't
Within the Old City. But you can spy its countless domes, steeps and minarets just over the walls.
What we think
Moshe Safdie and Piero Lissoni designed this 194-room hotel—which means the Mamilla is one of the most architecturally stunning hotels in all of the Middle East, if not the world. They polished the Jerusalem stone walls to a high gloss, made all the prettier by the abundant natural light ushered through the glass ceiling. But like a model with a Ph.D., the hotel isn't relying on its looks. Even the smallest studio room pulls out all the most tech-savvy stops for guests, including TVs in the mirrors and a glass-walled bathroom that changes from clear to opaque at the press of a button. Mamilla’s perks are equally gorgeous and design-forward, including a spa, a buzzing rooftop restaurant and one of the country's most well-stocked wine cellars.
You're here because
You desire a modern aesthetic—black metal headboards, glowing orb lamps—in an ancient city.
The Moment
In the sexily-lit, packed-with-locals Mirror Bar, you choose a Cuban Cohiba Siglo VI from the cigar menu, along with a thick pour of Glenmorangie 18 (aged in bourbon and sherry casks), and call the front desk. It’s time to extend your stay.
