Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort

Pura Vida in Costa Rica

What it is

A tranquil tropical resort with modern aesthetics.

What it isn't

A standard big-box resort that happens to be in Costa Rica; the Andaz has a secure sense of place.

What we think

The resort opened in 2013 as the first Andaz property in Latin America and felt immediately at home in its surroundings. Local architect Ronald Zürcher designed the hillside property with ample open-air spaces to showcase the surrounding tropical dry forest; cane ceilings arch into vaulted domes (inspired by armadillo shells) and local woods and stone were used as construction materials. The 153 rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and showers that open onto a private balcony—but note that only those on higher floors have views of the tranquil bay. Driftwood sculptures carved by local artists and honey-toned wood furniture add an organic vibe, though concrete floors and an open-plan design keep the mood contemporary. The resort’s considerable grounds feature nature trails for spotting local monkeys and birds, two pools (one for adults only), and two private beaches (mostly shaded—sun worshippers can take a complimentary shuttle to a neighboring beach club). The three restaurants serve excellent Costa Rican cuisine; our favorite is the tapas bar, with its live Latin music and resident mixologist.

You're here because

You’re looking for dependably warm weather, a good dose of style, a holistic sense of adventure and a strong vibe of authenticity.

The Moment

The adults-only pool, gently curved and edged by stone walls, looks out to the sapphire blue water of the bay. You lean back in the lounge chair and peer into the jungle foliage. Leaves rustle as a white-headed capuchin monkey leaps between branches. As the waiter approaches with your Cilantro Julep, you point and ask if he saw the monkey, too.
