Soho, London

Ham Yard Hotel

Bold, playful, buzzy

What it is

Modern and whimsical.

What it isn't

A classic London hotel with doormen in top hats.

What we think

Hoteliers Kit and Tim Kemp like to say that "hotels should be living things, not stuffy institutions." That's absolutely true at their Ham Yard Hotel, which plays an active role in the vibrant Soho scene. The 91-room property centers on a village square just off Denman Street, complete with artisan tea shop, florist, art cinema, and various adorable shops. Kit, who designs all the Firmdale Hotels, here repeats her familiar but winning formula of exuberant colors, perfectly mismatched patterns and unconventional textures, mixed with lively pieces of contemporary art. On the roof, next to the guests-only terrace, is a vegetable garden that dictates the menu at the Ham Yard Restaurant downstairs. The cocktail menu at the bar mixes and matches as deftly as Ms. Kemp herself—try the Black Margarita, made with blackberries and a hint of thyme.

You're here because

You thrive on the buzz of contemporary London, and you love the convivial Firmdale style.

The Moment

On the rooftop terrace, you wander through the rows of bountiful garden boxes, round an old stone fountain and look past the twinkling lights to the picturesque rooftops of London.
