The ivy-covered hotel is the hot newcomer on the hotel-dense blocks between the Upper East Side and Midtown. The old brick building was thoroughly gutted and given a serious recharge, its pinched windows replaced by huge wrought-iron panes to flood the space with natural sunlight. Common spaces and the hotel’s 229 rooms are open, airy and generously speckled with palms, ivy and a rather impressive collection of succulents. Like its sister property in Miami, 1 Hotel Central Park emphasizes handcrafted and natural materials: reclaimed barn wood, riveted steel beams, sheepskin, cognac leather couches. The holistic and sustainable vibe is ubiquitous, but avoids the cloying feeling that someone is going to force a granola bar on you. Your may, however, be offered fresh fruit: The lobby farmstand offers a bounty of snacks to snag on your way out the door. For larger appetites, Jonathan Waxman's revival of Jams—his seminal restaurant that brought California Cuisine to the East Coast in the 1980s—is just across the lobby.

The lobby carries the faint scent of cedar as you walk towards Jams. There's an almost palpable feeling of stability: Everything feels whole and clean, but at the same time fashionably chic and utterly cool.
Midtown West, on Avenue of the Americas just one block below Central Park. Carnegie Hall is a block away and MoMA a five-minute walk away.
