Hyde Park Corner, London

The Lanesborough

An Oetker Collection Hotel

What it is

A repository of Edwardian heritage—with all the mod cons.

What it isn't

Trend-setting (unless you consider a return to traditional British beauty a trend).

What we think

The landmark Georgian building that houses the Lanesborough hotel has stood across from Hyde Park Corner since the mid-19th century, and revealed its most recent renovation in July 2015. But instead of shoehorning a contemporary look into its stolid neoclassical shell, new owners the Oetker Collection looked confidently to the past, hiring the legendary designer Alberto Pinto to restore its Regency-style character. Pinto (who died in 2012, but whose Paris studio oversaw the work) brought in thousands of craftspeople to restore the ornamental plasterwork, immaculate stencilling, gold-leaf patterning and hand-painted trompe l’oeil effects. The 93 rooms (43 of them suites) are all rosewood and mahogany, with motifs of swirling, engraved laurel wreaths and acanthus leaves, rich fabrics in bright teal and rose patterns and extensive crown molding. Each has its own entrance foyer and a huge bathroom with hand-cut Italian marble, and each comes with its own personal butler, who does everything from unpack to serve tea to recommend a book. Underneath the exacting classicism is plenty of high-tech modernity. Gilt-framed artworks hide flatscreen televisions; a tablet controls everything in the room. There’s also a brand-new gym and spa, plus Céleste, a stunning, Venetian-style dining room with menus overseen by Eric Frechon, of sister hotel Le Bristol in Paris.

You admire old-fashioned luxury—and newfangled convenience.

The Moment

In the Garden Room, you light up a postprandial cigar—one of several pre-Castro Cubans in the walk-in humidor—and a Cognac from the bar’s centuries-spanning collection.

Restaurants & Bars

Céleste offers a dining experience par excellence, serving gourmet cuisine by executive chef Florian Favario that uses only the finest, freshest British ingredients. Between lunch and dinner, Céleste offers the quintessential afternoon tea experience, in a conservatory-style space filled with light, conviviality and the gentle accompaniment of a piano.
