Troutbeck

Estate of Bliss

What it is

Historic 250-acre Hudson Valley estate hotel. Home for centuries to naturalists, poets and romantics. Revived and renewed for the locavore, the creative, the curious and the adventurous to a high standard of luxury with amenities including a spa and wellness center, pool, tennis courts and lauded farm-to-table restaurant.

What it isn't

A cookie-cutter conference center…Manor House, Troutbeck’s main structure, feels like the historic home that it indeed is, and with varied indoor and outdoor gathering spaces Troutbeck makes for an excellent couples, family or corporate destination.

What we think

Troutbeck feels like your own private country getaway—without any of the headaches that accompany owning a country retreat (exorbitant taxes; bunnies turning your garden into a veritable buffet). Built in 1765 and one time host to Mark Twain, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau, it’s no wonder it still lures. Each room here is outfitted as luxuriously as possible, with Tivoli radios, radiant heat flooring in the just-redone bathrooms, Frette-swaddled king beds, and Malin + Goetz bath products. For total privacy, book one of the outbuildings; we like Benton Cottage, built as a tavern in the 1700s and now home to a kitchenette, foosball table and room to sprawl, including four bedrooms and bathrooms dotted with a curated horde of antiques.

You're here because

You love bucolic activities, like hiking, biking, skiing, horseback riding, clay pigeon shooting, falconry, and more…and you enjoy cozying up in front of the fire with an excellent cocktail or for a locally sourced meal after said outdoor adventures.

The Moment

Benton House has just launched with 13-newly renovated rooms, each with private outdoor space. Continuing the collaboration with Champalimaud Design, the rooms are thoughtfully appointed and surrounded by native grass fields and the Webatuck River.

Restaurants & Bars

Farm to Table Restaurant - You’ve heard whispers about Troutbeck’s farm to table restaurant, helmed by Michelin-starred Chef Gabe McMackin, since it opened. Cuddled fireside against the channeled leather of your curved corner banquette, you find it more charming than anything you’ve encountered back in the city—and that’s not *just* your cocktail with local gin talking. After your Steelhead trout crudo, you wander into the library, lined in its original wood paneling, and cuddle up to a leather chesterfield sofa with Yeats.

Location

In New York’s Hudson Valley but straddling the Connecticut border, Troutbeck has easy access to the charming villages of Millbrook, Millerton, Sharon, Litchfield and Kent, with the likes of Tivoli, Hudson and Great Barrington further afield. Renowned gardens such as Wethersfield and Innisfree, a famed and dazzlingly manicured Japanese and Chinese garden on 150 acres, are also nearby.
