Bairro Alto Hotel

On one of the Portuguese capital’s most picturesque squares

What it is

A 55-room hotel housed in a 19th-century baroque building in the heart of Lisbon’s historic downtown.

What it isn't

The hotel doesn’t have a spa or gym, though walking the neighborhood’s vertical streets might be enough of a workout.

What we think

Colonial and mid-century modern styles work well together in individually decorated rooms at Barrio Alto Hotel, many of which have minimalist vanities, retro light fixtures, Brazilian hardwood floors and intricate wainscoting painted in elegant creams and grays. Views from private terraces range from the lively Luís de Camoes Square to peaceful side streets, though all windows are double paned, ensuring a good night’s rest. Black and white photographs and modular lights and furnishings set the tone at the Flores do Bairro restaurant, where windows onto Luís de Camões Square and Rua das Flores make it an ideal spot for people watching.

You're here because

You want to stay in a prime, pedestrian-friendly area, and in a room that, thanks to its terraced overlooks, connects you to the city’s street life.

The Moment

Sipping a cold gin and tonic while lounging in a wicker armchair at Terrace BA, the hotel’s rooftop bar, which overlooks the city’s azulejo-studded row houses and the Rio Tejo.

Restaurants & Bars

Flores do Bairro Restaurant - A genuine “bairro” kitchen, with a relaxed and casual yet elegant environment

Terrace BA - Come alone or with friends, for a meal, a snack or a drink, or even to simply relax

Café-Bar BA - Perfect place for a light meal at any time of day.

Location

The hotel is located in Lisbon’s historic downtown between shopping-centric Chiado and Bairro Alto, famous for its restaurants and bars. A car from Portela Airport takes about 20 minutes.
