The City of Light’s newest palace opened to great fanfare in 2014—and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Formery the Majestic, a Haussmann-era hotel where Gershwin wrote An American in Paris and Kissinger signed the 1973 Paris Peace Accords, it was gloriously transformed by a four-year, $580 million restoration by the Hong Kong–based Peninsula Group. Though the 19th-century elements (limestone carvings, gold-leaf ceilings, are glorious, what stands out are the supremely modern additions, from the rooftop restaurant L’Oiseau Blanc to the stunning chandelier of 800 crystal leaves in the lobby to the 200 gadget-filled rooms. Technology is woven discreetly and intelligently throughout the experience: A personal tablet and in-wall panels control everything from lighting to room service to valet requests. The 200 rooms are some of the city’s largest—enough room to include a foyer and a full walk-in closet with dressing table.
