A warm welcome—and that view
What it is
A retreat with stunning seaside views and a warm welcome.
What it isn't
A glittery hotel with a high wow factor.
What we think
The family-owned, 66-room Santa Caterina has an amazing sense of place. The location—a clifftop scented by lemon trees, just outside the town of Amalfi—allows for sea views so breathtaking you'll feel like you're on a ship hanging over the water. That's especially true at the pool, which is built into the rock just above sea level (the elevator ride down to the pool, with its glass walls overlooking the sea, is an experience in itself). There are glitzier places to stay on the Amalfi Coast, but few have the Santa Caterina's warmth of service: you will feel like a guest in the owners' home, down to the handful of lemons you'll receive as a parting gift. Every room is different—some have hand-painted floors, others contain family heirlooms, others have large Jacuzzis. The honeymoon suites, tucked away on their own with private gardens and spectacular views, are among the most romantic on the coast.
You're here because
You want an understated base for exploring the Amalfi Coast.
Gliding up the cliffside from the pool, you press your face against the glass wall of the elevator, watching as the azure Mediterranean drops beneath your feet.
