What it is

An artful 208-room, 17-suite retreat along the Anacostia River with a rooftop cocktail bar and a buzzing local restaurant known for perfecting regional favorites.

What it isn't

Thirsty. A second bar, The Thompson Bar Room, awaits with unexpected cocktails like the frothy Clover Hitch: New Amsterdam gin, hibiscus, salted raspberry, lemon and egg white.

What we think

Ascendant politicos have no shortage of storied hotels to choose from in Washington, D.C…but when they want to break the mold, they proceed directly to Thompson Washington D.C. Set within an industrial framework with the architectural feel of artist’s lofts, the hotel is a breath of fresh air: unstuffy and unperturbed. Guest rooms are as bespoke as a fine suit, with custom headboards, hardwood floors, sculptural lighting and artfully curated bookshelves, plus perks all globetrotters appreciate, like blackout curtains and D.S. and Durga toiletries. We love that many rooms have private balconies, from the 306 square foot 1 King Balcony to the 805 square foot Thompson Suite Ballpark View, which has a prime overlook of neighboring Nationals Park plus a separate living space.

You're here because

The hotel has a delightful room service menu that gets your vote, with dishes including crab cakes with remoulade and cornbread with wildflower honey butter.

The Moment

You can tell the moment you arrive at Rooftop at The Thompson, the hotel’s thronged top floor bar, is the place to see and be seen in D.C. Where else can you take in a 360-degree panorama of town while sipping a Starboard Spritz with Tito’s, green chartreuse, charred thyme, strawberry and bubbles? George Washington doesn’t know what he’s missing.
