Hotel Zaza, Houston Museum District

Maximalist Marvel

What it is

An artful hideaway in the Museum District with themed suites, a glammed-up spa and buzzing pool bar.

What it isn't

Edgy. Comfort abounds here; amenities include blackout curtains, Italian linen-topped beds, soaking tubs, and even kitchenettes and washer/dryers in some suites.

What we think

The Houston hotel scene is often considered a little banal. Not so at Hotel Zaza Houston, where concept suites include a 1,071 square foot “Soho Loft” that evokes a stylish Manhattan apartment (complete with a brick wall and Eames lounge chair) and “Geisha House,” where the red and black interior includes a pagoda-shaped four post bed and a bathroom hewn of teak and pebbles that nods to Japanese onsen. Even standard guest rooms are anything but meh, with clawfoot beds, private balconies overlooking the cityscape and plenty of thoughtful touches (C.O. Bigelow toiletries and a Butler’s Pantry on every floor stocked with free coffee and tea to kick-start your day).

You're here because

You love nothing more than a striped poolside daybed, and this one (bonus!) comes with excellent cocktail service and a menu you’ll break your swimsuit diet for (get the tuna tacos on crispy wonton shells with smoked trout roe and avocado mayo).

The Moment

You’ve become a bit of a brunch fanatic, and the hotel’s Monarch puts plenty of others to shame. You take one look at your fried green tomato eggs benedict with buttermilk biscuits and start to salivate, literally. “Waiter, can I get another elderflower prosecco spritz?”
