The Abbey Inn And Spa
Religious Experience
What it is
A circa 1902 riverside convent transformed into a heavenly retreat for today, including 42 plush rooms, an intimate spa, and locavore restaurant in the Michelin guide.
What it isn't
A postage stamp. The inn sits on 65 acres, which feel especially expansive given their perch over the glimmering Hudson River.
What we think
Nuns and vacationers often have a similar goal: a transcendent experience. If you’re in the latter camp, you’ll likely find all you seek at The Abbey, which retains its deeply devout architecture (yes, that’s an original 1902 church bell hanging in the belfry) while rolling out the red carpet for today’s glitterati. Guest rooms are calming with their oatmeal color palettes, and fitted with perks like blackout shades, walk-in showers (with Gilchrist & Soames toiletries), a refrigerator drawer, and high-def TVs. But our favorite room option is undoubtedly the Abbey River View Suite for its separate living space and panorama over the river so stunning it helped launch the Hudson River school of art in the mid 19th century.
You're here because
The inn has interesting guest experiences on offer, including insider tours of KinoSaito Arts Center and kayaking on the Hudson.
The Moment
Like California, the Hudson Valley is famous for its foodstuffs—and you find they’re transformed into art at Apropos, the inn’s buzzing restaurant. Sitting overlooking the water, you’re so enraptured by your burrata with pecan butter and husk cherry preserve that you almost say a prayer. It’s that good.
Restaurants & Bars
- Apropos Restaurant and Bar - Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Apropos offers a contemporary atmosphere, a demonstration kitchen, and farm-to-table cuisine, with Mediterranean-inspired flavors and ingredients sourced locally whenever possible.
